Call for Presentations - 'Learning on the EDGE'

Print version (PDF 50KB)

Here we stand on the edge. The edge of the 21st century, the edge of a technological (and, we are assured, an educational) revolution.

'Learning on the EDGE' is looking for new ways of learning with and for young people who are on the edge between school and work, youth and adulthood, formal and lifelong learning.

'Learning on the EDGE' invites submissions from presenters who can give us a glimpse over the edge, towards the future and show conference attendees what’s on the threshold.

VALA is inviting submissions from leading edge educators and researchers on topics that address this multilayered theme. Presenters and workshop facilitators should ensure that their submission summary addresses one or more of the focus points below.

Technology

  • exploration of the links between technology and its role and useful application as an applied learning tool

Designing futures

  • applied learning curriculum, units and module designs that engage and enable young learners

Sustainability

  • innovative approaches to incorporating models of sustainability of resources ( including applied learning teachers)

Narrative of learning

  • successful stories of skill building approaches to inspire and invigorate.

It is expected that these presentations will not only be about Applied Learning, they will embed Applied Learning in their approach. The term ‘presentation’ is used here to cover a wide variety of learning methods. Active engagement of participants is encouraged and preference is given to presentations that clearly demonstrate this.

Applications should also include a summary of what the participants will take away from the session, for example.

  • an activity to use with their students
  • resources, handouts, weblinks
  • a new way of doing something
  • a new way of thinking about applied learning
  • time and opportunity to brainstorm implementations of an example of good practice
  • stimulation through discussion on relevant issues, theory and practice
  • being energised by collegial support and connections
