'Central to the Middle: Applied learning in the middle years' May 13, 2011
Friday 13th turned out to be a lucky day for those who attended VALA's Central to the middle- Applied Learning in the Middle Years PD day in the city. Craig Cummings started the day off the with a fantastic presentation on what has been achieved at Matthew Flinders Girls HS in this area. It was an inspiring and discussion provoking address that set a high standard for the following workshops, which did not disappoint. In the words of one attendee, 'the best VALA PD I've ever been to'. High praise indeed.
For those of you who missed it, see some presentations here. Thanks to all who presented and attended.

LiP - Learning in the Pub
'Assessing Applied Learning' • Wednesday June 16, 2010
By the warming flames of the fireplace at the North Fitzroy Star, a small group of dedicated conversationalists gathered to discuss assessment on June 16th. Despite it being a wet windy winter Wednesday (thankyou Playschool) people drove goodly distances and were rewarded with golden ingots from Jenny Roache who generously shared her ideas, experience and handouts.
The irony of talking about assessment during reporting time was not lost on the group, and many concerns were aired, shared and reviewed. Topics ranged across methods, tools and documentation. Jenny explained how she encourages students to be responsible for their folders, which record each session, and examples of how she ensures outcomes are met and evidence collected in portfolios.
The atmosphere was warm, the company excellent and the platter of dips, olives, cheese and hot bread satisfying.
Why not join us at the next LiP to be held in Term 3?
Keep checking this site for details.
A PD day (6 May 2010) focusing on preparing students for work and helping them to learn from work.

Again the conference has provided a great start for the year.
See some pics of who was there and what we did (tab through the pics).
Thanks to Luke Hayden, Gateway LLEN and the VALA committee.
A big thank you to the event trainees from Holmesglen Vocational College, teacher Jackie Prince and Principal Jan Lambert.
