‘ learning should be based around student's questions. … students … work together to solve problems rather than receiving direct instructions on what to do from the teacher. The teacher's job in an inquiry learning environment is therefore not to provide knowledge, but instead to help students along the process of discovering knowledge themselves.’ (Wikipedia)
‘Inquiry-based learning is a
student centred or active
learning approach that takes as
its starting point the natural
process of inquiry, building on
this to develop information
processing and problem-solving
skills. The focus is on 'how we
know' rather than 'what we
know', with students actively
involved in the construction of
their own knowledge’. (VCAA
2009)
One of the biggest challenges teachers and schools are facing in implementing and delivering the VCAL is to be able to practically and sensibly integrate real, engaging learning with the students.
Inquiry Based Learning is about students working together on problems and questions they want to answer. There has been much research done on Inquiry Based Learning and its real value to students and their engagement and learning .... but how do you ACTUALLY integrate it into your school curriculum?
Intuyu Consulting have been successfully working with a large number of schools in Victoria and Queensland on a simple but powerful approach to teacher planning and thinking to assist them in using Inquiry Based Learning (including in VCAL) in an engaging and real way.
