1. 'Central to the Middle: Applied learning in the middle years'

Middle Years logo

Friday May 13, 2011 • William Angliss Conference Centre - Melbourne

This exciting day of professional learning brings together teachers and action researchers who have been working on models of applied learning to engage students aged between 13 and 16.  This approach is sometimes badged as inquiry based, immersion based or hands on learning; whatever you know it as, its results are undeniable. The program includes a close look at a three year action research project from a Geelong school, and workshops focusing on what you need to know to develop, run and evaluate a program in your school. Dedicated to those who are looking for different ways to meet the middle school challenge.
A chance to explore options and ideas and talk to educators and program developers about how applied learning engages adolescents in years 7-9.
Check the VALA website (soon) for more details.

Youth Voices Annual Conference April 1, 2011

2. 'Youth Voices' - 2011 Conference April 1

The Youth Voices conference was a resounding success with many voices heard loud and clear!

VCAL students from Box Hill TAFE demonstrated applied learning strategies by live-blogging events VALA’s ‘Youth Voices’ conference on Friday 1st April. The students, trained by SYN, a youth-run media organisation, interviewed workshop presenters and interviewed participants about their reflections on workshops. Some of the results were presented at the close of the conference. See what participants and students said at http://syn.org.au/synbloggers

We have received many appreciative comments about the standard and breadth of the workshops, the smooth organisation of the day and the work of our the students of VCAL from Benalla College who worked on, at and for the Conference to help everyone find where they were going and talk about where they had been.

“It was excellent, many diverse and interesting sessions, speakers and networking”

“Positive messages and very professional presentations”

“I found all sessions worthwhile and three of them were exceptionally good”

“Great ideas, lovely venue, great to network with so many people”

“The tour to VCAL providers yesterday was excellent. It was by far the most valuable experience.”

Many thanks to all the many practitioners who contributed their time and shared their experience - let's do it again next year!

More updates on the website soon.

3. SAFE-T1 Resource Showcase

Dodgy Pete's Building Company

The Dodgy Pete’s Building Company unit of work uses a segment from the comedy show ‘Thank God You’re Here’ to encourage students to think about workplace safety.

Students look at hazards and risks on the building site and ways to fix them. They then invent their own ‘dodgy’ worksite and role-play a scene in the style of ‘‘Thank God You’re Here’’.

11. At risk youth: a transitory state?

This briefing paper from Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) looks at whether being ‘at risk’ is a permanent or transitory state. The paper suggests that rather than counting the numbers of young people at risk, we should instead turn our attention to young people who remain detached from work, study or meaningful activities for extended periods.
