Evening Ed - What’s it all about?
VALA knows it’s not always easy for teachers to get to PD events. That’s why we are trialling a new PD format held after school in the suburban fringes of Melbourne, called Evening Ed.
Our first one was held in Reservoir last term, and the next one will be in Heathmont. We are not trying to make it harder to get to; we are working our way around the compass!
Want to help?
Our members can help us continue this program by hosting an event. It’s easy! Your school may have a library area or a classroom that is not being used after school that would be ideal as a venue for Evening Ed.
Sessions run from 3.30 to about 5.30. You liaise with us, organise the booking of the room at your end and we do the rest! PLUS your school receives TWO free registrations for the event. Want to register your interest or know more? Email linnet@vala.asn.au
But remember, to be a host, you or your school must be a member of VALA. Not a member? Join here.
Join us for some more winter LiP (Learning in the Pub)
What has my mobile got to do with learning? • Wednesday August 18th

Where: North Fitzroy Star Hotel, 32-36 St Georges Rd, Fitzroy North

Other: You buy your own drinks - we provide a nibble and a conversation starter! What more could you want to while away winter!
Free but you must register! Preference given to VALA members.
More about this LiP
Didn’t make the last LiP? You missed a great evening.
By the warming flames of the fireplace at the North Fitzroy Star, a small group of dedicated conversationalists gathered to discuss assessment on June 16th. Despite it being a wet windy winter Wednesday (thankyou Playschool) people drove goodly distances and were rewarded with golden ingots from Jenny Roache who generously shared her ideas, experience and handouts.
The irony of talking about assessment during reporting time was not lost on the group, and many concerns were aired, shared and reviewed. Topics ranged across methods, tools and documentation. Jenny explained how she encourages students to be responsible for their folders, which record each session, and examples of how she ensures outcomes are met and evidence collected in portfolios.
The atmosphere was warm, the company excellent and the platter of dips, olives, cheese and hot bread satisfying.

New VRQA guidelines for VET providers
In December 2009, the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) published new guidelines for all VET providers in Victoria. These guidelines are in addition to the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF 2007) Essential Standards for Registration.
