1. Num3racy professional development - it’s as easy as abc, 123 ...

Looking for some new ideas for teaching Numeracy? VALA’s Num3racy professional development day will provide two hands-on workshops:

'Having some fun with maths and numeracy' run by Dave Tout; and

'Applying maths through investigations and activities' run by Chris Tully

The workshops will concentrate on applied learning approaches to get students interested in and inspired with maths.

2. SAFE-T1 Resource Showcase

WaiterMost of the time we need to follow the directions and instructions of our boss or supervisor. BUT what if the boss asks us to do something unsafe? You choose – safety or ?? encourages students to think about choices they have when confronted with an unsafe work situation.

3. Free resources on workplace bullying – regional workshops

Workshops will be held around the state:

  • Frankston, Mornington Peninsula, Ballarat, Bendigo, Colac – Date and venue TBC
  • Gippsland, November 25, 2011 - Venue TBC

4. Term 3 SAFE-T1 competition - OHS Stick figure animation

We are inviting budding animators to submit a stick figure animation about OHS. 

Stick figure animationThe animation should highlight the main OHS hazards in one of the following industries:

  • Construction
  • Manufacturing
  • Retail
  • Agriculture
  • Hospitality.

Entrants will be judged on their creativity and how effectively they show the hazards in their chosen industry.

The best 10 entries (as judged by a panel) will receive thumb drives or T-shirts.

5. Youth Foundations Laverton grants

Youth Foundations Laverton has grants of up to $1,500 available for young people between 12 and 25 to implement projects that benefit their local community. For more information on how to apply or to discuss your project idea, please contact Youth Foundations Facilitator – Erin Young on 0410 041 235 or erin@lavertoncommunitycentre.com.

6. Centre for Multicultural Youth media project

Centre for Multicultural Youth are looking for young people from diverse backgrounds aged 18–25 who have a story to tell about their community, culture, or views.

7. New website for young people to share information about mental health

The Orygen Youth Health Research Centre have developed a new website where young people can jump on and share what treatments have worked for their mental health problems and learn what treatments have worked for others. They hope to increase awareness of treatment options and inform treatment decisions based on what has worked for similar young people. Website: www.whatworks4u.org

8. NAB Schools First Impact and Seed Funding Awards

Applications have now opened for the 2011 NAB Schools First Impact and Seed Funding Awards. They close on Friday, 29 July 2011. 

Applicants are advised to read the documents in the Awards Application Pack, including the Terms and Conditions, before starting their application. More information.

Knit Kit9. Knit and win with Save the Children

Save the Children is providing schools with the chance to win up to $10,000 as well as helping to save lives. The ‘Born to Knit’ campaign hopes to create 15,000 knitted blankets for disadvantaged children in developing countries. Warm blankets help ward off illnesses such as pneumonia, one of the biggest killers of children under 5.

Save the Children and Paton’s are running a schools based competition and finalists will be invited to present how they would like to spend the prize money. Click here for more details and to register.

10. Heywire 2011: tell your story and make a difference

Heywire is an ABC Radio initiative, providing a space for the conversation, stories, debate and ideas involving young people from rural and regional Australia.

People aged 16–22 are encouraged to tell stories in all forms of media - text, photos, video and audio - about life and issues in Australia outside the major cities.

The 40 best stories will be presented on the ABC through ABC Local Radio, ABC Radio National, triple j and abc.net.au. Winners also receive a trip to the Heywire Youth Issues Forum in Canberra in February 2012.

Consumer Stuff for kidsConsumer Stuff coverMaths: a resource for teaching and learning numeracy uses an applied learning approach to encourage young consumers to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours to make informed decisions about a range of consumer issues including shopping, budgeting, paying bills, using credit wisely, mobile phone and internet plans, buying a car and responsible gambling.

Consumer Stuff for Kids teacher resource to support primary school teachers to address the learning standards outlined in the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) Humanities - Economics Level 4. The resource is also useful for VCAL teachers. A claymation DVD – Clips For Kids – accompanies  the resource.

12. From education to employment: how long does it take?

This project examines how long it takes for young people to move from education to work, and identifies factors that distinguish people who are able to move quickly into employment from those who take many months to find work.

This professional development will look at theories, principles and frameworks around outdoor education therapy programs. The forum includes academics, clinicians and practitioners.
