1. VALA receives the VCAA Chair’s Award

Linda Mitchell and Adam ShoemakerVALA received the VCAA Chair’s Award at the recent 2010 VCAL Achievement Awards. The Award recognises the outstanding achievement of an individual/organisation in delivering or promoting the VCAL in their particular community or region.

Katrina King, Carrum Downs Secondary College, and Kelly Lackmann, Narre Warren South P-12 were named VCAL Teachers of the Year, an Award sponsored by VALA. Katrina is a member of the VALA Committee of Management.

Jessica Brown, Monbulk Secondary College, gave the 2010 VCAL Achievement Awards Student Speech. Read Jessica’s moving speech.

VALA presents a day of ideas and activities guaranteed to invigorate any VCAL numeracy program!

Presenters will engage VCAL and other applied learning teachers with practical ways of encouraging students to embrace a greater understanding of maths.

3. SAFE-T1 Resource Showcase

Lonely PartsAnimate and engage is a step by step guide to creating simple animations. It was developed by documenting the process that students went through to create the Lonely Parts Club animation.

The guide will be of assistance to all those who would like to ‘have-a-go’ at having students create an animation but have no idea of where to start. It will also be helpful for those who have been through the process but are looking for some tips.

 

 

4. Term 2 SAFE-T1 dodgy OHS photo competition

Get your students to find some dodgy OHS practice, take a photo, write a few sentences explaining why it is dodgy and send it to jan@vala.asn.au by July 1st.  

The best 10 entries (as judged by a panel) will receive thumb drives.

Make sure your photo doesn’t identify any people or organisations/companies.

5. Workplace bullying and young workers

Regional workshops are being offered to introduce the new free resources on workplace bullying available on the Safe-T1 website. The workshops are free but registration is required.

Several identical programs will be offered around the state.

7. General capabilities in the Australian Curriculum

ACARA will release draft materials for the general capabilities section of the Australian Curriculum. Individuals and groups who wish to give feedback can do so by registering on the Consultation section of the Australian Curriculum Website. The consultation period will be from mid-June to the end of July 2011.

8. National focus awards

Each year the Australian Government recognises the achievements of individuals, groups, organisations and industries that provide outstanding contributions towards achieving national priorities in the vocational education and training (VET) sector.

The National Focus Awards, which will be included in the Australian Training Awards this year, will be awarded in five categories: Leadership in Quality Award, Australian Apprenticeships - Employer Award, Community Pathways to VET Award, School Pathways to VET Award and the Skills for Sustainability - Educational Institution Award.  Visit www.deewr.gov.au/nationalfocusawards for more information.

9. Apprentice programs receive budget funding

The Australian Government will invest more than $200 million over four years to boost apprentice completion rates and provide enhanced mentoring services to support apprentices during their training.

The Australian Apprenticeship Access Program will receive $19.7 million over four years to help more than 5000 vulnerable job seekers develop the skills needed to succeed in an apprenticeship.

11. NAB Schools First Seed Funding and Impact Awards

Applications open Monday, 20th June. There is over $5 million in funding available this year to 110 outstanding school-community partnerships.

12. Pathways: developing the skills of Australia’s workforce

This research report published by NCVER looks at pathways between elements of the vocational education and training (VET) system, how they are working and what improvements can be made. Read the report.

13. New flexible learning toolboxes

Two new flexible learning toolboxes have been developed:

Music Box supports the Certificate II in Music (CUS20109), which includes working with new technologies for producing, performing and distributing music as well as musical industry knowledge.

Sustainable Manufacturing supports certificate II through to graduate certificate qualifications in the Manufacturing Training Package (MSA07). It introduces experienced workers to a formal learning environment engaging them in structured sustainability training.

14. Longitudinal surveys of Australian youth

The Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) is a research program that tracks young people as they move from school to post-school destinations. LSAY publishes research reports and briefing papers that provide a strong evidence-base for policy makers on young people's transitions from school to post-school destinations.

The event will include discussions on road safety, gangs and violence, mental health, social networking and new technologies.

16. Be the hero –reducing violence against women

Be The heroThursday 23rd June, 10am - 1pm: Melbourne Town Hall, Swanston Hall, Corner of Swanston Street and Collins Street.

Be The Hero! is a free interactive web-based program that teaches and encourages young men to build respectful relationships with women.
