1. Changes to School Education Funding from 2012

Have you told your local member what you think of the cuts to the VCAL Coordination funding?  You can find a sample letter on the VALA website as well as links to a few of the news items about the cuts.

2. VALA AGM and forum

What?  

  • Start with a nibble, a drink and a chat with VALA committee members and staff.

  • Hear the guest presenter, David Gallagher, Manager VCAL, Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority talk about ‘VCAL 10th. Birthday Did we get it right?’

  • Take part in the VALA AGM.

  • Some of us will stay on for dinner (at your expense).

RSVP: Attendance is free but you must tell us you're attending. Email info@vala.asn.au by Friday, 21st October. Preference is given to VALA members.  If you are thinking of staying for dinner, could you let us know so we can pass the information on to the people at The Clare.

4. 2012 VALA conference ‘D.N.A. Developing New Assumptions’ – Call for workshops

DNA Developing New AssumptionsThe theme of the 2012 conference 'D.N.A. Developing New Assumptions' invites the question - what do educators take for granted about teaching and learning, and what do we need to change?

VALA invites facilitators, educators, teachers, trainers and learners to share their experiences, insights and programs, small or large, with others in the learning community by delivering a workshop that supports the theme to the VALA Conference 2012, to be held at Rydges Bell City, Preston on March 23, 2012.

To register your interest in running a workshop, please complete the online form by December 9, 2011.

13. Can young people change Australia?

In Their Own Hands: Can young people change Australia?, a new book by Lucas Walsh and Rosalyn Black, debunks the myth that Gen Y’ers are apathetic, selfish, disengaged consumers.

14. School and work and post-school outcomes

Does combining school and work affect school and post-school outcomes?  Results show that individuals can combine school and work with minimal impact on their study if the hours are modest and those working longer hours show a stronger orientation towards work than study.

15. Successful youth transitions

Achieving the transition to adulthood is not straightforward. This briefing paper defines a successful youth transition based on previous research and considers a range of factors that affect transitions. More

16. Social capital and youth transitions

Social capital and youth transitions: do young people's networks improve their participation in education and training?  According to this paper, the answer is ‘Yes’. The authors also found that social capital influences educational participation more than factors such as parental education and occupation, geographic location, cultural background and academic achievement. More

18. Training.gov.au

Training.gov.au is live – training.gov.au is the new database replacing the National Training Information Service (NTIS). TGA is a ‘one-stop shop’ for downloading either a single unit of competency or a whole qualification, as well as accessing information on nationally registered RTOs delivering training.
