VALA brings WorkSafe ads into the classroom

WorkSafe logoOccupational Health and Safety Week Initiative - October 27 to 31

WorkSafe research clearly shows that young people in casual employment, or new to the world of work, are one of the highest risk groups for workplace injury. WorkSafe Victoria in partnership with the Victorian Applied Learning Association (VALA), recently launched SAFE-T1 - a project to develop a set of informative and engaging resources for teachers to drive the OHS message home - in schools.

As part of Occupation Health and Safety Week – October 27-31, VALA and WorkSafe are encouraging teachers to use ads to drive home the OHS message to their students. The latest set of WorkSafe advertisements target this group by presenting familiar workplace scenarios for young people by showing dramatic ‘real life’ workplace injuries. Teachers who contact VALA during Occupational Health and Safety Week will receive a free DVD produced by WorkSafe Victoria featuring the current OHS advertisements targeting these young workers. Mapped to units within the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL, Year 11 and 12) and Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS, lower years), the resources will be accessible, available and highly relevant to the jobs young people are set to undertake.

Andrew Williamson, President, VALA says: “These ads will work for young people because they can associate with the characters. The rather gory presentation of injuries produces an emotional ‘tag’ to the message setting the information in the mind. It’s a clever and effective teaching tool.”
