VALA wants you - as a member of its committee of managementThis is an exciting time for VALA. Applied learning is gaining recognition, VALA has grown rapidly and there are many opportunities for VALA to explore. Think about becoming a VALA Committee member and helping to set the directions for the future. The AGM will be held at 7.00pm, 28th October at the North Fitzroy Star, Corner of Newry Street & St Georges Road South, North Fitzroy. Evening Ed – How do I… make a podcast? Creating Podcasts for VCALWednesday October 13th from 4:30pm-6pm • Gilmore College for Girls, 298 Barkly St, Footscray The session will include a rundown on what a podcast is, how to use one in the classroom, how to create a simple podcast using a freeware program and the basic steps for assisting students to create their own podcasts. Presenter: Benne Harrison, a VCAL and drama teacher at Gilmore College who successfully uses podcasts with VCAL students. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided but anyone with special dietary requirements should bring their own supplies (soy milk, gluten-free goodies etc). Numbers are limited to 25 and participants will need to bring their own laptop. Members: First person from each member organisation is free - but you must register - then $25 for subsequent members. Non-members: $25 AGM and Learning in the PubSpring into LiP followed by the VALA AGMThursday 28th October • LiP – 5.30 for 6.00 start • AGM: 7.00pm North Fitzroy Star,Corner of Newry Street & St Georges Road South, North Fitzroy LiP: Getting to the finish line Donna Leonard from Victoria University (TAFE) has been involved in a program funded by Skills Victoria, the TAFE Completions Pilot and at this LiP she will share findings and ideas from the study. This includes strategies and interventions that organisations can implement to impact on student completion rates. This topic relates to all kinds of learning organisations where students are enrolled in VET subjects, and points to some practical big picture approaches to the question. As always, our speaker starts off the conversation and there is plenty of opportunity for discussion and questions so come along and join in. SAFE-T1 News – www.safe-t1.net.auSAFE-T1 Teacher Feedback SurveyTell us what you think about SAFE-T1 by taking part in the SAFE-T1 Teacher Feedback Survey. This survey is an important part of the SAFE-T1 project that is designed to use ‘hands-on’ learning as a way for students to learn about safety in the workplace and, in particular, how they can reduce the risks of being injured. This survey is being administered by Dr Damian Blake from Deakin University and the information you provide will only be used to assess the effectiveness of the SAFE-T1 project material so it can be improved. Competition closes Friday 17th September, 2010 Other newsVCAL Achievement Awards 2010Nominations are now open for the VCAL Achievement Awards for 2010. The Awards recognise the outstanding achievements of young people who participated in the VCAL in 2010. They also recognise the contribution and achievement of VCAL teachers and partner organisations that have contributed to the development and delivery of innovative VCAL programs. Guidelines and nomination form are available on the VCAA website. Applications close Friday, 3 December 2010. The SFS unit aims to develop skills for students who are planning to continue with further studies after their Senior VCAL. The new unit is offered at the Senior level of the VCAL and will give one credit to the VCAL as a general credit. The VCAA is offering professional development about the unit during October. Tell Us 2010Seven thousand young people across Australia had their say in Tell Us, the country’s biggest national student survey on school education. The survey results, released by Foundation for Young Australians (FYA) reveal that secondary students want a more active role and a greater voice in their schooling. Nearly half of students surveyed said they don’t help decide how their school runs, while only four in ten students agreed that their school listens to what they have to say.
