ACER and Multifangled: Having fun with Maths

Run by Dave Tout. Camberwell, Melbourne October 20

Multifangled 'Interactive and hands on, great presenter, lots of useful resources to take back to school'.

'Excellent, experienced presenter with great fun activities for me! Fun and entertaining!'

is just a picking of the excellent feedback participants at the recent VALA conference provided. Want more? Join Dave on the 20th of October at ACER in Camberwell. The activities focus on the development of core maths skills through approaches such as cooperative group work that also encourage the development of mathematical language, the use of real-life and hands-on materials, as well as having fun with maths. The maths content will focus on areas such as numbers, measurement, statistics and data, location and direction, and will illustrate alternative approaches to the traditional worksheet or textbook approach for teaching numeracy and maths. The activities have mainly been developed for youth and adult numeracy students but are suitable for all students, especially middle years and VCAL students.

Victorian Electoral  Commission - Partner Up - VCAL integrated unit

Teachers can now access Partner Up, which is Passport to Democracy's (PTD's) free integrated unit for the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) students. Covering Senior Personal Development Skills and Literacy Skills, the unit supports students to form effective partnerships with local organisations and take practical action on a community issue they care about. Partner Up resources include teacher guides and student workbooks with 31 VCAL-aligned learning activities, partnership tips handouts, an online game, an online video about community partnerships and eligibility to the Partner Up prize. The resources are designed by a VCAL teacher in the hope that Victorian students will realise the influence they can wield as members of a democratic society, and have been reviewed by an expert in the VCAL curriculum.

Over 90 listings from 70 plus providers are categorised into different topic areas. The directory was built as part of a Victoria Institute project supported by a Victoria University grant and project partners Melbourne City Mission, Oakwood School, SEDA and VALA. The listings were compiled following consultation with flexible learning providers and staff but please note listing in the directory is not an endorsement.

Innovative Partnerships for Youth Engagement in Education and Work

University of Melbourne and Deakin University - Malgorzata Klatt, John Polesel Nicky Dulfer Karen Starr, Damian Blake

Late last month the final report of the ARC Linkage project titled 'Innovative Partnerships for Youth Engagement in Education and Work' was launched. The report examined how collaboration between school systems, employers and other organisations can enhance VET and applied learning programs in secondary schools and build youth engagement with education and work. The report mapped out the types of partnerships and roles each of these partners played, and developed a rubric to enable schools and their partners to advance from a simple partnership to a best practice innovative one.
