There are many student directed, hands on learning projects available, many through websites. They are thoughtfully and thoroughly designed and based on sound student centred and applied learning principles. But how do we as teachers ‘let go’ of being the director of operations in the classroom and enable student ownership? VALA are thrilled to announce that a facilitator from the ruMAD? project will be joining our first LiP for 2010 to run a discussion on this topic.
ruMAD? stands for aRe yoU Making A Difference? It is a dynamic mix of education, action, advocacy and events. Think of ruMAD? as a toolkit that enables young people to lead social change and become active citizens. It is focused on values and led by students but benefits the whole community. Check it out at www.rumad.org.au
Professional development with a difference! Come along and share drinks and discussion with interesting people. Stay for dinner and further conversation.
Gateway LLEN held a celebration and awards ceremony, in September, to highlight the excellence of VCAL students within Monash, Manningham, Whitehorse and Boroondara.

The SAFE-T1 website was
launched at the VALA VISTA Conference on 26th August.
Launching the website were Jill McCabe, Manager of
the Workplace Support and Education Division at WorkSafe
Victoria and Andrew Williamson, President of VALA.
Young Victorian workers (15 - 24 years of age) are more likely to be injured at work than any other age group. Many of these young workers are still at school and work as part of their study and/or for the wages. Schools, TAFE Institutes and community education providers are in a position to assist young people to gain knowledge of and skills in OHS before they enter the workforce and to support them when they work as part of the school curriculum or in after-school jobs. As a part of their strategy to reduce the number of young people injured at work, WorkSafe Victoria has funded VALA to develop resources to inform and engage young people.
The SAFE-T1 website, developed by VALA, provides information about OHS as well as teaching resources. While the website is great resource now, it will grow over the next two years as new resources are added.
Check out the website at www.SAFE-T1.net.au and think about sharing OHS resources you and/or your students have developed.
Have your students been ‘doing’ OHS?
Have they come up with some great
ideas or produced some resources
on workplace health and safety?
Perhaps they need a little help to finish their resource / product – some additional expertise, software or materials??
VALA as part of its SAFE-T1 project is offering small grants (approx $500) to assist students (15 – 24 years) to take their ideas / resources to the next level.
